New Technology Available For Hair Loss

August 3, 2021

August is National Hair Loss Awareness Month. As a specialist of skin, nails and hair we feel the importance of educating individuals on hair loss as many don’t realize that it falls under dermatology. Each week, we see patients expressing their concerns with hair loss. Even more so since it is listed as a side effect of having had the corona virus infection (not the vaccine).

In most cases, thinning hair is not associated with health concerns. Some degree of hair loss is normal. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) point out that people lose 50-100 hairs each day. While new hair typically regrows, overtime, some follicles stop producing hairs.

Here are some possible causes of thinning hair:
  • Hereditary Hair Loss
  • Age
  • Cancer Treatment
  • Pregnancy, Illness or Other Stressors
  • Hair Care & Styling
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Scalp Infection
  • Medication
  • Scalp Psoriasis
  • Sexually Transmitted Infection
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Diet

Finding the cause may seem daunting or overwhelming but the key to getting good results and preventing further hair loss is knowing the cause. And let’s face it, getting to the bottom of it can also help with a person’s mental health and self-esteem. Visiting your dermatologist for an evaluation is great place to start.

Treatment

While there are home remedies and over the counter treatments available, there are also prescription medications and medical treatments provided by board certified dermatologists. Over the counter treatments minoxidil, active ingredient in Rogaine and Nioxin may help when the hairloss has no underlying medical cause. Additionally a rule of thumb is to make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamin D, which can be addressed through sunlight and diet. Niacinamide, a B Vitamin supplement is beneficial. Biotin historically has been suggested but is no longer believed to be helpful.

Part of the hair follicle contains stem cells responsible for growing a new hair. When they slow down from age or hereditary causes hairs become smaller and finer and do not lengthen. Thanks to advancements in technology, and the partnership between Lutronic LaseMD and Kerafactor, non-surgical hair restoration therapy is now an option. Keralase combines laser enhanced penetration of hair growth factors is designed to stimulate stem cells and improve hair growth and revitalize the scalp. Improvement in scalp health and hair growth will likely be seen through a series of six treatments with each scheduled two weeks apart. Desjarlais Dermatology and Aesthetic Center is one of the few licensed medical facilities offering this procedure in Michigan.

Men and women suffering from hair loss or hair thinning due to aging, a change in hormones, pregnancy, or post-menopause stress are all good candidates for the KeraLase™ treatment.

Besides being polite and looking people in the eyes during a conversation where is the next place you’re drawn to during face to face communication? The lips. There is a lot of focus around your lips so there’s no mystery why women have the desire for “perfect” lips. You use your lips for talking, eating, smiling, and kissing. When you’re happy, sad or angry, it’s your mouth that’s usually the first to give away your emotions.
